Recently thrifted marble lamps.

So we had a snow storm last week; tree brances fell; snow and slush turned to ice; I was out of active yeast to make some bread; and the power went out for a day and a half- it was ugly. One funny conversation with my six year old.

Jovan: mommy when is the light coming back?

me: very soon son, very soon...

Jovan: I'm bored!!!!!

me: read a book, color.

him: but I just did!

me: take a nap.

Jovan: mommy, am I having a nightmare?

me: hahahahaha!

This past weekend in between playing in the snow and keeping warm with soup and hot coco; I painted my photo/living room wall a new shade of yellow! I used a venetian plaster and I think it came out ok considering I didn't have a clear idea how to apply it or how it's going to turn out. I applied two coats of paint and for a small wall it took me two days to finish! So this is how it looks. The previous gray wall was nice but I thought it's time for a little change.

We went light with the holiday decor this year, I got a three-foot fake tree from Goodwill for a couple of dollars, strung some lights and a few ornaments on it and called it a day. I love the two vintage wreaths pictured above (also found at Goodwill) and put them in my living room along with the stockings. We also hang some of the kids artwork on the wall. Simple is good.

thrifted a few weeks ago but can't seem to let them go yet. There's something very romantic about these pressed flowers. When I was in high school I remember getting very excited finding pressed leaves and flowers from books I used to borrow from the library. I collected them in a small tin box and eventually gave them away to a friend when I left home for college.

While most garden blooms in spring and summer, for my garden it is the fall season. My front yard is bursting with the most brilliant colors right now. The maple tree right next to my living room window cast a golden glow in the mornings; the path to the driveway and entrance is covered in warm shades of brown and the fiery red maple tree is just gorgeous! I had to ask my husband not to rake the leaves just yet.

The other day I took my Christmas decor out off the shed and dusted the vintage ceramic trees I've collected this year, now they are sitting on my dining table ready to be photograph. I shoot a few this morning when the sun was out, and just got so excited to decorate my home for the holidays.

I've seen them everywhere- the hanging chair, the epitome of all relaxation chair. I'd like to imagine myself curled up on one of this enjoying a glass of ice tea reading my favorite book while gently swinging and taking in the sweet gentle breeze in my patio.

Well, I recently found this awesome rattan hanging chair at an auction and would have hang it in my house if only I have enough room but alas no room, too much mismatched chairs sitting around and two feisty kiddos just quashed my daydreaming alltogether.

Today was a woo-hooo! (pun intended) kind of day; see these group of fine looking owls? I got them in one fell swoop at my local thrift store this afternoon. And to top it off I also found this gorgeous pink enamel pot for $2 at the same store!

After I paid the cashier, I got in my car, warned my husband (who's been patiently waiting) and let out a huge WOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOO!!!

red and blue finds and name game

While my mind was to fill the shop with orange, black and dark spooky items for the upcoming halloween season; it is the bright and colorful shades of red and blue that has been showing up during the last few weeks of thrifting it seems. The blue lamp and doggie poster was an auction haul from a few weeks ago.

And just this weekend during a quick stop at a nearby thriftstore, I found this pair of navy wooden clogs. It's a little snug when I wear socks but I love the perforated look so I bought them anyway.

I also found this really nice modern framed poster from a recent auction and I really love it, I may keep it for a while (sorry folks).

And a large red and white model boat that I been meaning to list. And since we are on the subject of primary colors, here's a fun fact:

My youngest brother has three boys and he all named them with the three primary colors. The eldest was born ten years ago and he named him Red, we thought, ok...cool... then his second boy came and he named him Blue, then we start protesting to no avail and the third came just a couple of months ago and we thought Oh NO!!! Green?!?!

Isn't it crazy? Pilot Inspektor, Apple, Maddox all of sudden sounded so yesterday and normal.

Though I'm not very familiar with his work and only read a chapter about him in my western humanities class back in college, I thought it'd be nice to have these for some easy reading and thumb through the photos.

so as you may or may not know, I have a thing for chairs- this recent find, a "comb-back" Windsor chair from Goodwill I thought kind of look sweet grouped together with the straw basket and the floral oil painting I got from the auction last week. I just wish I have a big house with many corners so that I could arranged a vignette like this with all my thrifted chairs. These items by the way will be listed in the shop this week.

Yesterday's auction has left me all high as a kite...I still am today. I scored two modern leather chairs one that resembles this and this which I may or may not list; they are so comfortable and looks cute in my living room. I also got a dozen lamps, lots of neat paintings and hundred other little things. Needless to say my bank account is dry but I am still high from all the treasure I am currently unloading and finding spot for them to be stored.

They all seem to have a regular appearance in my minivan each time I visit the auction house or thrift stores; just like vintage chairs and canisters I can't leave a cute vintage lamp behind I must take them with me. So, these are some lamps I’ve thrifted in the last couple of months that will be making their appearance in the shop this week.

I'm excited with this recent vintage find, I'd like to show it off- it's an old dentist coin bank made of cast iron. Wouldn't this make a really cool decor in a dental office or a gift to a dentist friend?

When I bought this I thought it was just a neat little decor piece, then eventually figured out that it was a coin bank. It features a dentist and his patient and I just love these guys expressive faces!

"open wide!!"

The way the coin bank works is this; you place a coin inside the left coat pocket of the dentist and then to activate it, press the metal lever located just in front of the patient's right foot.

and this will cause the patient to fly back out of his chair and the dentist to fall back on his seat (and most likely you too the operator if you don't exactly know what is that little lever is for and forgot to properly position your thumb before pressing it!)

As the dentist falls, the coin drops into the coin slot just behind him.

I haven’t done any shop preview in a while so I thought I’d post some photos of some recent finds that will be up in the shop this week and also to let you know I am alive and doing well. I have been taking some time off online- aside from a few hours a week of photographing and maintaining Modish Vintage, I have been busy just hanging out with the kiddos. Presently we are enjoying tending our small garden of strawberries and tomatoes, cooking, continuing with the swimming lessons, walking to the library and watching lots of Netflix. I am currently hooked watching the past episodes of Lost, don’t ask me how I missed this show but it’s so good I can’t stop watching.

I’ve also cut down on bringing stuff home from thrift stores. I do my shopping once a month and I list them all throughout the weeks, which really helped keep my budget in check and my studio/basement organized. I know how hard it is to list and so much easier to find and buy inventory.

So anyhoo, that's it for now... I will be listing some neat lamps in the shop this coming weeks and maybe small pieces of furniture. Hope everyone's enjoying their summer.

Last week I saw this recipe from Joy the Baker and happened to have all the ingredients available in my fridge. I made it with some bratwurst sausage and red bell peppers to add color. It was so good that I made them twice last week and also because I have a bunch of spinach left and didn't want it to go to waste. Hubby loved it and requested that I make it once a week.

I recently joined Pinterest and love looking at other people pins, there's so much inspiration in one place. I found these beautiful images all evoking the beauty of spring from Tinas's board and it had me dreaming of a real spring weather.

This weekend I didn't do any thrifting at all, but did some yard work and also had a nice intimate dinner with the mister at our favorite italian place and went for a leisurely walk on the mall right after, which seemed a little weird now that I don't ever visit the mall anymore, I would be looking at a Coach purse and telling myself just how much vintage items I can stuff my car with that price. But this weekend I feel like treating myself a little so we stopped by at H&M- the only clothing shop that carries nice, inexpensive clothes that does not make me feel guilty of buying. I bought a couple of nice shirts and a top and a pair of sandals, and I can't wait to wear them outside without having to wear socks and jacket.

Hello everyone, hope your weekend is going well. Mine has been busy and long, actually this week has been particularly long with the kids being home for spring break means me working less and entertaining more which is good in a way for someone who's obsessed with work, a little play can't hurt; we were able to ride our bikes one afternoon, do some swimming and enjoyed a picnic by the lake when the sun was out this week. But I have to tell you, I'm so looking forward for Monday, alone, in a quiet house all for myself.

This morning I woke up earlier than everyone else and snapped some photos for the shop preview. Here are some photos of the new "spring" vintage finds I will be listing starting tomorrow, Monday.

Can I still talk about vases, I promise this will be the last one-- for this week :)... So what I haven't shown you from this weekend's haul was a couple of the Fiesta vases I won from the same auction; one was in my favorite shade of seagreen and the other one was black. I had a mini freak-out when the auctioneer announced that I won them for $25.

I love Fiestaware and the color on this vase is just gorgeous but I really didn't know what's their value. I cleaned them to their shiny state this morning then went to the trusty ebay and searched the completed transaction for Fiesta vases,and saw this one just sold for $950, NINEHUNDREDFIFTY!, (major freak-out!) it has the same color, same size and design.

I think I'll hang on to them for now and maybe list them on Ebay sometime in the future, I don't know yet, I usually list the higher-end stuff on the other site as they don't do too well on Etsy for some reason. So yes, it was a very surprisingly fruitful weekend indeed.

I went to an auction this past weekend with three things in my mind; spring, flowers and the blooming camellia tree on my backyard. When the auction was over I found myself carrying four large boxes of these pottery vases to my car; I think I may have overdid it this time. Needless to say these will be in the shop sometime this week.

Can you tell what these photos are of? If you thought they are a close up shot of a very cold beverage you are right, it's beer! I've come across Burcu Avsar site via desire to inspire and was instantly captivated with his images. This is one of his project where he wanted to capture the beauty and texture of beer which he did just so. Check out his amazing still life and interior images here.

I made a few changes here in the ol' blog and switched back to the two column which seemed less cluttered and easier on the eyes. I've also changed the banner and fonts; if you have been visiting here for a while you know I don't usually settle on the same design for a long time so things will still be changing here in a few weeks, the gray is not really working for me I need some colors, although I am currently trying to decide on a font that I will stick to for all that is related to the shop and right now I am torn between futura, garamond and palatino. What's your favorite font?

A couple of weeks ago I found an antique agricultural book at an auction with a bunch of these neat looking insect prints, I think they would look great framed and hung in the kids room but I have yet to ask my son's approval who hates bugs and not quite over yet with this Care Bear stuff toys. But aren't they cute?

The sun was out yesterday so I took advantage of it while the kids are at school and shoot like 500 photos for my shop updates good for the next couple of weeks. In addition to the vases I mentioned yesterday I will be listing more vintage original paintings and prints in the coming weeks. I have been getting lucky finding some interesting ones lately. This particular seascape painting is my personal fave, it's so realistic I could almost hear the wind blowing and the waves crashing.

Since we are on the subject of beautiful vases from my previous post, I want to show you the black and white vases that are coming to the shop next week.

They look so nice all grouped together like this don't they? I'm tempted to keep them but I don't think they will go with the rest of my home decor, I'm more of like teal-red-orange kind of person when adding colors into my home. But black and white is a classic and versatile color scheme and everything goes well with it and the fact that they are all the rage right now (black walls, chalkboard everything, black and white furnitures), you can't really go wrong. I came upon this new, up-and-coming vintage Etsy shop 1001vintage the other day, (thanks to the awesome MMMC for her post and connections) and have gone back many times perusing their pages and checking new items. The shop is based in Amsterdam and is full of well-selected modern pieces home décor and lighting, they have the most gorgeous vases to die for, it was really hard not to click on most of their items and placing them in my cart to purchase.

Last week I was convinced spring is coming, the weather was so nice, then yesterday it started to snow, a lot. I made it to the store last night to pick up some essentials and today school is cancelled. We're taking it slow today, with lots of hot cocoa drinking, cartoon watching, coloring, we may even do a little bit of baking later.

Some numbers that are floating around in my head today...

The kids just completed their 100th days of school, such a great milestone!

I looked at my calendar and it dawned on me- my munchkins are turning 6 in less than 3 months!

2 things they want for their birthday; cupcakes and bouncy house, which I think is the perfect combo.

The shop reached more than 10,000 hearts this month! so much love!

Speaking of love I can't believe I have been doing this Etsy gig for almost 3 years now (will be 3 years in April)... and I still LOVE it so; every minute of it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! I live and breathe Etsy, can you tell?

5 years ago we moved into this house, the longest I have ever stayed put in a place for the last 20 years. Where all 2,000 sq ft of it now houses hundreds of my junks ahem "treasures", kidding, only a thousand of it the rest is our living space (hubby thinks). A place where many wonderful memories, growth and incredible milestones were made.

Just a small preview of what's coming to the shop next week; vintage painting, ceramic sailing ship lamp, antlers, piano lamp, bookends, turquoise teapot and a gorgeous pair of cut glass lamp with crystals.

oh and I didn't win the chairs from the auction, boohoo, they were too pricey for my budget and I really didn't have a place to store them anyway... I only took home two small things, a cinnabar jewelry box and a small coffee table, but my wallet was really happy.

I've mentioned a few days ago that I want to cut back on going to the auctions and I have been very good lately. It's also nice that the other place I go to take photos of their stuff so I can preview them beforehand. And I usually pass if there's nothing that interest me...for instance this week looks like it's going to be a boring one... there are lots and lots of jewelries, not into jewelries.

I stayed up late last night preparing the kids valentine exchange for school today. A total of 46 treats including their teachers were wrapped, signed and delivered this morning. This is all new to me but it seems like Valentine's day is one big day at school, kids were sent home last week with list of students in their class, each one expected to bring a gift to commemorate the special occassion. The kids are all excited about it and both came home this afternoon each carrying a big bag of goodies. There are few of leftover sweetheart candies and I creatively sprinkled around our dinner table tonight. Happy V-day!

my vintage collection: clear perfume bottles

These perfume bottles are not as fancy as these other ones, but they appear ten times more beautiful when placed atop the dresser next to a window while the bright sunlight washes over them. I won these a few months ago and they’ve been sitting on my dresser (I tend to hang on to some of my inventory, then when I get bored I list them), and the sun was out the other day so I opened my curtains for the first time since last fall (yes I like my bedroom dark at all times-it's my migraine thing) and my room had splashes of lights bouncing all around the walls, it's was very pretty... but my dresser needs some good decluttering and these has got to go…along with a huge stack of past due books from the library. Look for them in the shop soon!

hello! hello! how are you guys? I realized I haven't posted anything for this month of February, I'm experiencing some serious blogging funk lately...and I'm glad to find some treasures from this past weekend so I have something to blog about this week :)

I've also been refraining my self from going to too many auctions lately as I often get carried away bidding on so many stuff that I don't know what to do with, so to cure the itch, I go to a couple of thrift stores on the weekends and set a budget to spend. No more than $20, unless of course I find a cool looking chair.

This past weekend I found a stack of old childrens books from Deseret and I really love all the colorful illustrations on them. They look like they were from a library and has the word "discard" on the inside, I find it strange that they would get rid these nice looking books.

Also found this pair of Dansko clogs from the same thrift shop for $6! And they look almost new!

I also thrifted this sweater for my daughter, it's in the sweetest shade of green. I love it, she could probably still wear it for a few weeks, it's still cold here in the NW. Although she told me she is tired of wearing her winter clothes.

One night last week while I was doing the dishes she came up and asked me; "mommy is it summer tomorrow" I said "no honey it's still winter" and then she just started crying, and I started laughing. She's so funny sometimes.

Grand total of my finds? $16! Not too bad right?

......and......now on a more personal note.....

I got an email from a reader wondering why I don't post any of my photo here...it's because I don't have many pictures of myself; in most gatherings or family events I am always behind the lens taking pictures of people and things. And I'm not photogenic at all, on most of my pictures I always look either tired, sleepy, or awkward- just look at this shot I took of myself yesterday morning after dropping the kids off to school. This is me, most of the time I'm in my yoga pants or jeans, sweater, and ponytail, and I don't wear makeup. And I don't do my nails, I mean they're nice and clean but I rarely paint them . The only time I had my nails done by a professional was when I got married. So there's me.

On a lighter note, here's a more cheerful photo of my daughter Sofia...she loves her pictures taken and she's very photogenic even if she makes funny faces.

vintage postcards

On my recent auction trip, I won a big box of junk from the silent auction table; on the bottom of a few brass items and all the junk was this wooden box. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was a box of vintage postcards.

Whoever collected these postcards was determined to fit them all in one box, it was full, the box was falling apart on the sides.

new home: marble owl and botanical poster

It's been a while since I did one of these "vintage items in their new home" post here it seems... photo appreciation is scarce lately but I found a couple.

Starting with this marble owl that travelled all the way to Netherlands and graced Saskia's mantle for the holidays. (She also writes a blog that showcases her wonderful vintage finds here.)

and this botanical poster became an inspiration for this customers bathroom redo. Lovely! Her orange vase and green file box was also from Modish Vintage shop.

As you may or may have not noticed, the shop is being populated with animal and wildlife figures at the moment, just click on the vintage zoo section for a quick field trip J When I went to an auction last month I was hoping to find vintage organizational stuff for a new years update; like drawers, desk trays and the like but instead found lots of animal figures; from elephants to these cute marble creatures. I barely got into the box of carved wood birds and the brass rabbits this weekend.

Bunny rabbits, aren't they adorable… and since it is the year of the rabbit, what great timing to find these bunny themed decor to offer to the shop.

So here's a little tidbit about the Year of The Rabbit according to the Chinese Zodiac: The year of the Rabbit promises to bring some much needed peace and tranquility...People born in the Year of the Rabbit are kind, loving persons, and dislike any hostile act. They give others an impression of being frail-looking because of their gentle appearance. But, in fact they are strong-minded and have strong wills. They pursue their ideals all their lives in a precise and orderly way. They do things slowly and deliberately because of their cautious characters. Rabbit people are usually relatively careful when it comes to their finances. They love hunting for antiques, arts and crafts and will tend to make sound investments in these types of things.

Ahem, sounds so much like me especially the last part... for sure I thought I was born within the rabbit years but I'm not, turns out I am a rooster which has the following prediction btw; "Rooster is the sign most likely to encounter difficulties this year." Well, I say bring it on baby! I'm ready for you!

but back to the auction finds...I also found these old majolica plates...the piece de resistance of my recent auction trip. From years of reading and researching (prowling ebay) about Majolica, I've never seen anything like this with the whimsical pattern of bunnies doing human things dressed in dapper attire. So very tempting to keep...

So I’ve jot down my personal goals and wishes for the new year and tucked it next to the calendar in my office which will serve as a daily reminder of sort. Nothing too dramatic but fairly similar to what I’ve wished for last year, with a new kitchen or kitchen floor still in the running.

And here's some goals for Modish Vintage:

Offer more furniture items; maybe more selections of affordable accent chairs, end tables, coffee table and footstools
With the said offering of more furniture comes the need for more storage. So I hope to turn my shed in the back into a nice, clean dedicated storage for my furniture items. Although I have been fantasizing renting a small shop/space that I can decorate with my finds and have open doors for customers once or twice a week. That would be really nice…
Offer more lamps and lighting fixtures
Get some old artwork appraised and list them (though not really sure if Etsy is a good venue for that but we'll see)
List more home accessories geared towards modern and asian inspired décor.
Offer upcycled vintage homewares.
Hopefully add international shipping rates to most of the smaller items to make shopping easier for my international customers.
A quicker turn around on shipping sold items.
